{this moment}

A Friday ritual inspired by Soule Mama. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment.

A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

Something I never noticed....

Every day at lunch, I slip away from my desk
and go into one of our spare offices.
I browse all your lovely blogs...

This week, one such blog prompted me
to come home and look through
some of the quilts that were left to me by my
mom's mother and I began to see
things I never appreciated before about
one of my favorite quilts that she made.

From back here, you don't notice much...
but come with me, while I show you what I
noticed today, in part,
because of all I have learned from
reading all of your blogs when
I first started quilting ...

First, this quilt is completely hand made, no sewing machine needed.
I believe it is called a window quilt.or something close to that...
if you know the official name, comment and let me know!

Second...every fabric in this quilt is a piece of one of my
grandmother's dresses or shirts...and she cut nearly all of them...
in a fussy cut.

Next, even though her stitches may not be the best, or the
most creative, it is all her stitching and I am pretty
impressed at how uniform and perfect it looks.

I know this is a HUGE QUILT by ANY STANDARDS.
and I have it on good authority that she only quilted on her bed.
Can you see how she pieced this entire quilt - hand sewing
one block at a time to another block?
and let me tell you ...that the quilt is all cotton
and the thread is still strong.

But here is the cool part...

Mind you, I have had this quilt for about 15 years.
and I use this quilt...every winter.
 AND I JUST NOTICED THIS...
In a small corner of this lovely masterpiece,
My grandmother signed the quilt.

She put her name..first and last.
and then...
something I hadn't seen.

She put the date she started the quilt... 3/28/1976
and the date she finished.... 9/20/1977
How COOL IS THAT?

Finally,
This quilt weighs14.3 lbs.
It has NO batting...just fabric and thread.

I love this quilt on my bed...the weight
of it hugs me to sleep every winter night...

Such a legacy...and I didn't even really
appreciate how much time, work and love
that went into it...
but I finally do now.

Ever do this?

Please tell me I am not the only one that does this...
Remember this?

I loved this fabric combo when I started...
and it was perfect for the table runner I had in mind...

But then, my vision began to change...
so I made a few cuts.

And in my mind's eye, I was thinking...
Neat! I haven't seen this pattern before...
I might have just come up with a
REAL WINNER!!!

But then, If I am going to do that...
perhaps I should take another little
gamble and cut this a little more but at an angle...

WOWZERS! I think I am really going
to have an eye popper!
(still my mind's eye talking here)

 OH MAN...if this works out,
I am going to be asked for how I put this together...
You know...someone MIGHT want this PATTERN....
(My mind's eye is now twitching with delight!!!)

Three hours later, I am beginning to
just get FLAT OUT GIDDY!
(Mind's eye is twinkling at the beauty of my newest creation...)

 Four hours in...
(Mind's eye is squinting...does that actually look
like an ironing board cover now?)

Good grief.

 Five hours in...
(Mind's eye is thinking, "OK, I was a little off
track, but now...maybe...)

 5.5 hours in...
(Mind's eye is dimming...)

 7 hrs in.

(Mind's eye is dry...
and sorry for all the the thinking...
and now just wondering
does anyone else's eye cause them this much trouble?)

Four days later...

still wondering ....

NOW WHAT???

Please share some ideas....
I am out of eye drops.

Hugs,
Lana

For Little Holdyn...

Tonight I worked on a little baby quilt
for my grand baby...
He will make his arrival sometime in November...

She picked the fabric, and not wanting
to disturb the cute animals on the front...

My only two chances to put my mark on it
would be either in the binding or
on the back...

 So, the binding was easy...

and then I thought, why not put his name on the back...

Sew...I cut out the letters of his name...
H-O-L-D-Y-N

Found some thread that would match...

Ironed on the letters

and did a little simple stitch around each one.

This is only one of many I will make for him,

and that will keep me busy until he arrives!

Hugs,
Lana

Making an Important Goal...and a GIVEAWAY!!!!

Today, I was catching up on some
blog reading since it's been a lazy day for me ...
Yay!
and  I came across one of my favorite blogs
and realized she crossed a MAJOR mild stone yesterday...
well, almost.

She doesn't know I am writing this...yet...

When I saw how close she was, I just couldn't help but think,
WE - her online community
COULD MAYBE HELP HER REACH IT!

***NOTE***
as of 7:49 p.m. CST Sunday evening
Linda not only reached her goal,
but you all helped her go over her goal...
But if you are just reading this and willing,
Please join us...

You see, Linda
and who is also the moderator of
and
was diagnosed with ALS in 2001...
She doesn't write about it...but I knew about it...
and so when I saw her little button for the ALS Walk
when I was reading her blog today,
I clicked on it to sponsor her
and read that it was
YESTERDAY!

Continuing to read down the page
I noticed that her goal this year was $3500
and she was currently at $3320.

Sew...here's my idea...
Since the website is still
taking donations...
What do you say, we HELP her
MAKE HER GOAL...

Visit her page HERE ~

If you donate, put your blog as the sponsor,
come back and leave me a comment -
tell me you donated and the blog name
you put your donation under...
and I will put your name in the hat for
a $50 gift certificate to

I will draw on Friday, October 7th!!!
