The Layout

Since this is my first large quilt, I have decided to
tackle it with a little head start which is not like me.
I usually just wing it block by block, but this one
had to be different or my dyslexic mind would
crater under the disorganization!
So my first step was to build the block.

Now, this was a little difficult since the pictures on the pattern
weren't really clear enough for me to see which
fabric went where...so I guess I did sort of
wing it a little bit along the way.
shhh...don't tell.

For those of you that quilt all the time on these
bigger quilts, forgive the crawling I am doing
right now..but I haven't learned to walk just
yet when it comes to these...

Well, this is pretty familiar territory now...
It is pretty much just working out like a
log cabin block...
Maybe I CAN do this!!!

There are twelve blocks in this quilt and when it is all trimmed
out with sashing, it will measure a hefty 78x78...
I know I said that last time..
but I keep thinking about that size...

These fabrics were what the original quilt was made out of
and Courtney loved it just like it was...
I am not gonna tell a bride-to-be she can't have
what SHE wants!!!!

Sew...this is what each block will look like.
At this point, I thought about how to make it a little
easier on myself and I prayed it would work...
I stacked 11 more blocks on each of the blocks above
and instead of making each individual block - one at a time...
I would do each step 12 times in one sitting.
Now, just because that is how my mind
is thinking, doesn't mean it will work...after all,
I had blocks left over when I stacked them...
And in my  mind that worried me!
But I just have to believe that the pattern
wouldn't have had me cut ALL of those blocks
unless they have a purpose later on in the quilt...
so I cheerfully set them aside until I get to that point.

(I cheated and looked...and I don't see where else those
other blocks are supposed to go.)

But, I have FAITH!

The Hidden Cross Journey...

Over the past few weeks, I have been busy in the studio
working on my largest project to date...all the while,
my sweet friend Patty has been even busier
putting the finishing touches on her daughter
Courtney's upcoming wedding in a few weeks...
(that's why neither of us have been here much...)

My project,  The Hidden Cross Quilt pattern from  A Sewing Basket,
will be my gift to Court and her sweet husband to be...

This was a scary venture for me, I have never attempted a
quilt of this size (78x78) and although I knew I could easily
put the quilt top itself together, I wasn't sure if my little
home sewing machine could quilt it...
*sigh*

I can not show the quilt finished yet, but I will post my journey
through it...and we can all watch it come together
one step at a time...

AND

I promise to mix some of the other projects I have finished lately in with it-
so you don't get bored! My poor little studio is a mess but a lot
of lovelies have been created in there lately...
I hope you enjoy them.

Home Sweet Home

My favorite place to go - hands down, is our Aunt Barbara's and Uncle Faybert's house...
Every time we stop in, they meet us in the driveway with those famous hugs...

They are some of the busiest folks I know! Uncle Faybert is the "world famous" bee keeper and keeps the best garden around! Oh...and he makes the best wine around too!!!!

Uncle Faybert's Bee House

Aunt Barbara keeps busy with Meals on Wheels, her church and her lovely little home...oh, that she has been known to scrape, prime and paint every few years...

Last time we were there, I walked around and just took some photos of her beautiful little Texas home...

Look at those shelves and that bedspread...

And this quilt on the bed in her little sewing room...

I am just in love with all that she and Uncle Faybert have built...
but most of all, I am just in love with them.

IDIOT !!!!!

Did I mention we went to the ranch last weekend?
and that it was over 100 degrees?

or that I spent max about 28 mins in the direct sunlight?

Oh, I worked...
on
Sunday.

But on Saturday,
I was sick as a dog!!!
I even went out to the truck and laid down
while my sweet man
shopped all alone in our favorite store.
(Lowes)
No fun.

Sunday, I think I made up for it...
even though..
 A-G-A-I-N,
I rammed my head into another post!
(on the other side this time though...
just like last weekend...)

I think I need a new pair glasses
or else I need to buck up and put on
those stupid snake boots so
I will quit looking down
at my feet!

However, I digress.

That 28 minutes of SUN did a REAL number on me!!!
I won't show you any photos of me...just look at the
block photo above that I made for my swap partner...
and it tells MY story quite  nicely...
Shall we all say it together? (see my post title)
Now....where did I put that bottle of Advil...

Go! Go! Go!

This found it's way into my car today...
Can we say EXCITED???

THREE WORDS...
SALE.
JoANN's.
FABRICS.

I bet I have cut over 100 hexies tonight alone!

My sweet man keeps telling me it's after midnight...
so I had better stop...
*smiling*

Lazy Day cookin...

Fried Rice
(photo by: Marcus Nilsson) / Original recipe by by Victoria Granof

Any of my friends will tell you...they love my fried rice...
I get it from here and just add my own touches...
The best thing is it is a quick, lazy day meal when
you don't want to spend ages in the kitchen...
If you give it a try, let me know how it turned out!

Happy Wednesday!!!

Makes 4 servings
total time: 10 minutes
FYI -  The secret to good fried rice is starting cold cooked rice. Cook the rice either at night or in the morning and pop it in the refrigerator until you are ready to put it all together.

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons canola oil
( I use a little bacon grease- not PC, but I do it...YUM)

2 eggs, beaten
( I only add eggs if we are going to eat it all - I don't like left over eggs)

1 bunch scallions, roughly chopped
( I use two bunches of green onions, roughly chopped)
1 cup leftover pork, chicken, or beef, diced
( I use lean hamburger and chopped bacon cooked in the microwave)

1 cup frozen peas and shredded carrots, thawed (plus any leftover vegetables you have on hand)

4 cups cold cooked white or brown rice

4 tablespoons soy sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

1. In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil bacon grease over medium-high heat.

2. Add the eggs and scallions. Cook, breaking up the eggs with a spoon until they are lightly browned.

3. Stir in the meat, vegetables, rice, and the remaining oil  bacon grease (about 6 tablespoons)  Increase heat slightly and cook until the rice is crispy, about 5 minutes.

4. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce with 4 tablespoons of water. Pour the mixture over the rice.

5. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the rice has absorbed all the liquid, 3 to 5 minutes.

6. Season with the salt and pepper and serve, with extra soy sauce on the side.

Block Swappin...and Wood Boppin...

This came in the mail today from Cathy in Australia!
Isn't it beautiful...
She made it as a tribute to our American Flag...
and I love it.
Thank you Cathy!

Here's a sneak peak of what is coming to you...

Hope you love it.

Here is what is on my design board...

and this is what my sweet man and
I worked on this weekend!

Our little ranch is really coming along...

even though I did have a little claim
for workman's comp...
don't ask...
let's just say,
I was injured...
injured bad.
:(

but my employer averted a major claim...
by settling my claim with this...

That my friends...
is payment in full!

and FULL it was...
so this is in my
tummy tonight...

Who said a good diet couldn't look pretty???

Now you know where I have been all week!

Can't wait to show you my
favorites tomorrow

Goodnight all!
